School Council

What is a School Council?
A School Council is a group of students who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school.

At North Harringay we aim to help children and young people to have a greater say over matters that affect their school and wider lives. Our Council  usually meets fortnightly.  Topics discussed at the meeting are varied but might include school uniform, healthier school meals, playground improvements  and clubs. The School Council is given a small Budget and held accountable for their expenditure. This has been spent on playground equipment and on spare swimming kits.

What makes a good one?
A good School Council is one that represents the views of all students and gets things done.
These are some things that make one effective:

  • Regular meetings where children take turns to chair and take minutes
  • A group that is not too big
  • Good communication between representatives and their class
  • Training for School Council  members
  • Smaller groups (subcommittees) working on specific events or issues
  • Annual evaluations
